The latest Google Panda update has been released and all the indications are that it is not just an update but a filter and is also an actual Ranking Factor.

Google is constantly enhancing and changing the ranking algorithm it utilises, making subtle changes and adjustments in its efforts to always return the most relevant search engine query result back to its users but many of the updates go relatively unnoticed. Not so with the Panda update. I have heard that the Google Algorithm can be compared to a recipe. If the ingredients are added in the correct amount and ratio and the dish is cooked for the right amount of time then the taste is delicious.

The Panda Update can be considered a major service or overhaul to the Google search engine algorithm.  Anyone remember the Mayday Update of last year? The Google engine is now tuned up again but a main ingredient of the recipe is different.  A core ranking factor of the algorithm has changed.

Panda is not just algorithm update but a filter , it is like PageRank. It is how Google calculates ranking factors. It is one of the integral values and variables that is fed and indexed into the Google Algorithm.

The clever people at Google have designed and implemented a new filter to detect what it now considers to be sites containing low quality content and pages. Thats why it is sometimes referred to  as the Farmer update because it has had a major impact upon the rankings of what have become content farms. Too many pages of low quality content that is of little value to users will now cause your site to flagged by the Panda filter. Excuse the pun but it is now one more factor that the Seo industry has to pander too.

Google’s very own Matt Cutts is purported to have publicly stated that the Panda filter is not constantly running all the time however. It apparently consumes too much computing power so it is run periodically from time to time similar to how Google used to index.

The first Panda update was released on February 24th 2011 consequently followed by Panda update 2.0 on the 11th of April.

Panda 2.1 followed  on the 10th of May and the most recent update took place on the 16th June.

If any client’s sites have been affected by Panda it is worth considering that any changes and alterations you make in response to Panda may not be indexed until the following Panda update is released. Sites that have dropped in the rankings directly as a result of the update ,even if they have been altered to be Panda friendly will have to wait to see any improvement from a previous penalty possibly until the following Panda update is released.

Understanding and adapting to the Panda filter means sites that are rich in informative, quality content should be rewarded because they are giving search engine users exactly what they want according to Google. The focus is on quality content and ensuring the relevance and usability of the search engine for its users. For too  long the content farms and scraper sites were ranking too high in the serps.  Quality Search results are what Google wants and if your site passes the Panda filter it will be rewarded by higher search visibility with the poor quality content where it belongs…out of the sight of everybody and far below the fold.
